When I'm not deejaying weddings, I can be found: Hunting down new and experimental musicians, attempting to learn how to play an instrument, travelling, and spending time with my friends and family.
My other interests: Reading and writing poetry, researching music, sound design, and science.
First dance songs I'm enjoying lately: "Brighter Than Sunshine (Aqualung), "Sea of Love" (Cat Power), "Lovesong (Adele), "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" (Death Cab for Cutie), "Passing Afternoon" (Iron & Wine)
Personal interests/hobbies: Creative writing, listening to music, poetry, music theory, physics, meditation, the art of mixology.
Favorite music artists: Daft Punk, Al Green, Explosions in the Sky, Temptations, Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas, Beatles, Death Cab for Cutie, Miles Davis, Adele, Paul Oakenfold, the Local Natives.
Causes I support: Habitat for Humanity, Greenpeace, and the preservation of art, literature and world music.
A quote I live by: "Adversity is the first path to truth." - Lord Byron
Best advice I ever received: From a fortune cookie…“If you are still hungry, eat another fortune cookie.”
Seven words that describe me: Rational, easygoing, good listener, perceptive, excited, introspective, zealous.
Five prized possessions I couldn’t live without: My MacBook Pro (my personal music collection is on it, and I need it to make money and, subsequently, buy food to continue living), a copy of Daniel Quinn’s Ishmael, An original 1995 poster insert from Chrono Trigger, a giant goblet shaped like Gumby’s head with the inscription “I scratch my mind... I think about LIFE sometimes,” a signed copy of Elise Levine’s short story collection “Driving Men Mad” (she was a former writing professor and mentor of mine).
Something that no one would guess by looking at me: I have a strong, hidden desire to become a full-time day trader.
On being a wedding DJ: "I originally became interested in deejaying because of the technology. I really enjoyed the combination of the tactile sensation of adjusting and tweaking equipment and the extremely high-tech software that’s available now. But the more time I spend deejaying, the thing that makes this career such a blast is the energy at a wedding. Whether it's high energy or low-key, a deejay sees the party from a different perspective. While guests may hear a song and jump to get on the dance floor, the deejay has carefully selected that song to fit into the moment. It's a test of psychology and timing, and when a song is a hit, the payoff for the guests and the deejay is extremely rewarding."
